History

The Mönchsjoch Hut, was built in 1978/79 and renovated and expanded in 2003/04 and is owned by the cooperative Mönchsjoch Hut. The Grindelwald mountain guides assume the majority in this cooperative.

The hut has more than 117 sleeping places and a restaurant having a capacity of 130 seats. In mid-season, from the end of October till mid-March, 2 non-warded winter rooms with 16 sleeping places are available.

The fresh water tank of the hut, widely collected meltwater, holds 3.000 l and is limited. If necessary, 750 l tanks are transported with snow cats from the Jungfraujoch to the hut for having enough fresh water especially in the meltwater lacking months. Garbage, sewage and faeces are transported down to the valley by helicopter. There are no showers.

Electricity for lights, telephone and internet is won through solar panels on the roof of the hut. For the operation of large equipment, e.g. dishwasher or steamer, an external diesel generator, situated in the woodshed, is switched on when needed.
